What we celebrate

The Gospel according to Luke tells how the Mother of God and righteous Joseph bring the Child Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem, according to the Law. The One who gave the Law humbly comes under the Law. He does not enter as a master demanding the first place, but as a child carried in the arms of a poor and obedient family.

There He is met by righteous Simeon, an old man waiting for the consolation of Israel. The Holy Spirit leads him to the Temple, and Simeon receives Christ in his arms: in this Child he recognizes the salvation prepared for all peoples. Beside him stands the prophetess Anna, who speaks of the Child to those who were waiting for redemption.

What the feast says about Christ

The Meeting of the Lord holds two truths together: Christ is a real little child, and this Child is the Lord. He receives the whole human path: birth, growth, family, obedience, entrance into the Temple. But Simeon sees more deeply: the One held in his arms is the light given to the world.

So the feast is not only a gentle scene between an old man and a child. Simeon also says that this Child will be a sign spoken against, and that the soul of the Mother of God will be pierced with sorrow. In the light of the Temple, the road of the Cross can already be glimpsed. The joy of the meeting does not hide the seriousness of salvation.

A meeting that concerns us

Simeon and Anna are images of faithful patience. Their faith is not built on a quick emotion, but on long waiting, prayer, presence in the Temple, and listening to the Holy Spirit. When Christ comes, they recognize Him quietly, because their hearts have learned how to wait.

The feast therefore teaches us to come before God with patience. Sometimes a person does not receive an immediate answer. But the Church calls us to remain close to prayer, to the Divine Liturgy, and to humble obedience, until the eyes of the heart begin to see the light of Christ.
