When you do not know how to pray
Sometimes prayer does not begin with impressive words, but with one honest sentence before God: “Lord, I am here.” This page gives you a few simple beginnings, without replacing confession, the counsel of a priest, or the real help you may need.
If you do not know what to say, start very small
Make the sign of the cross, stay silent for a few moments, and say slowly: “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me.” You do not need to feel something special for prayer to be real.
Choose what you are carrying
I am afraid
Say simply: “Lord, I cannot carry this fear alone. Be with me now.”
Guilt is heavy
Say: “Lord, You see what I have done and You see that I want to rise. Show me the first step.”
I am angry
Do not pretend to be calm. Say: “Lord, guard my mouth and do not let me wound others.”
I feel nothing
Say: “Lord, even if everything in me is dry, I do not want to run away from You.”
I am grieving
Say the person's name before God and ask for rest, light and consolation.
I want to return
Begin with the truth: “Lord, I do not know how to return, but I want to walk toward You.”
A three-minute rule
- Make the sign of the cross, without rushing.
- Say several times: “Lord, have mercy.”
- Name the people for whom you want to pray.
- End with one concrete step: read a psalm, enter a church, or ask for help.
Do not stay alone with a weight that is too much
If you are facing overwhelming suffering, danger, panic, or thoughts that frighten you, speak with someone trustworthy and seek immediate help appropriate to the situation. Prayer does not require you to carry alone what should be carried with others.
