Can God punish someone for a simple look back?
In short: God does not mechanically judge an outward gesture. In Scripture, the outward gesture often reveals the state of the heart. The problem is not the eye, but desire turning back toward what God is handing over to judgment.
The Orthodox nuance
If the scene is isolated, it can seem disproportionate. But the Bible does not present it as a fine for moving one's head. Before the glance, there is a clear command and a flight from a condemned city. The glance becomes the sign of an inner refusal to be separated from that world.
God, Scripture says, sees the heart. Man sees appearances, but God sees the depths. That is why such passages should not be read as divine arbitrariness, but as the stark unveiling of a truth: a person can be taken out of evil before evil has been taken out of him.
For us, the meaning is very concrete. When God draws you out of a passion, a lie, or a life that cuts you off from Him, do not feed nostalgia for chains. Not everything we miss was good for us.
